Pressure - Flow Rate Relations in High Flow Therapy: Theory and Experiments



High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) therapy is used in hospitals for treatment of lung diseases and has the potential to reduce the need for intubation. The airway pressure during HFNC therapy is expeted to be an important parameter, but quantification of the parameters of influence in the relation between the flow rate and the airway pressure lacks.

In the present study, theoretical models describing the relation between the flow rate and the generated airway pressure are generated and two experiments are conducted; (1) an experiment with a simplified model consisting of a small tube inserted in a larger tube and (2) 3D-printed models of children that are ventilated with the OptiFlow Junior device. During ventilation, pressure measurements are performed in the OptiFlow device and the airway and it is found that the pressure generated in the airway can be predicted accurately by the pressure level at the end of the nasal cannula.

A lung simulator is built to investigate the effect of breathing patterns of a child on the pressure signal measured in the OptiFlow Junior device. Phase diagrams of these breathing patterns are obtained to enable a qualitative study. Further research is needed to determine the phase diagrams for common diseases before these diagrams can be used as a diagnostic tool.
