Optimizing wire drawing process using Design of Experiments and researching sensors possibilities
To meet the growing demand for cables for wind farms, The Twentsche Kabelfabriek (TKF) has started the production of subsea cables. TKF has extensive knowledge in producing cables but they are coping with some start-up problems that are common when dealing with a new product and process. One of the key properties of a power cable is its electrical conductivity, the ability to conduct power. The requested electrical conductivity was not achieved during production. At the same time is the need at TKF to continuously improve the production process. The lean philosophy is largely implemented and the next step to improve the production process could be smart industries. Smart industries or industry 4.0 is the new industrial revolution. It changes the way of producing by combining and integrating sensors, data, Internet of Things (IoT) and other technological developments. Workflow, maintenance and control of the production process can be done remotely of every individual machine. The ultimate goal is a self-regulating production line in which machines and processes in a factory can communicate through a cloud based environment.
The goal of this master thesis is to analyse the wire drawing process to improve the electrical conductivity of the wires for the subsea cable. Wire diameter, strain and tensile strength are also important parameters of the wire and are taken into account. In relation to smart industries are the possibilities examined of adding sensors to the wire drawing machine.
First a Design of Experiments (DOE) is set up to analyse the wire drawing process. The process is researched if the electrical conductivity can be improved by changing the settings of the machine. The obtained data was tested for its usability. A proposal for the settings was made and executed to test the validity of the model. This resulted in a minor improvement of the electrical conductivity but a large deterioration of the strain.
The DOE resulted in a concise model which provide input to automate the wire drawing machine. Sensors are reviewed which can control the wire drawing process. Sensors that can monitor the condition of the wire drawing machine are also examined.
