Summary

Throughout the decades more and more businesses have started to concentrate on improving their sustainable performance as the public is gaining awareness on the impact of global warming. Jacobs Douwe Egberts (JDE), is no exception to that change. However, JDE Professional, the business-to-business department for coffee appliances, lacks strategy on how to deal with Design-for-Environment (DfE). Therefore, this thesis proposes a framework including tools, on how to improve sustainable coffee machine development for the professional market.

The framework consists out of 3 Design-for-Environment tools, each positioned strategically within the current workflow of JDE Professional. The first tool consists out of 7 Principles each containing various guidelines, which can help JDE getting started with developing new ideas and concepts with a sustainable focus.

The second tool is a checklist based on the same principles and guidelines, and can be used to validate the developed component, structure or system. This results in a score that can be viewed in the Eco-Performance Wheel for easy comparison, and communication to the stakeholders.

The last tool is the comparative Life-Cycle-Assessment-lite. This tool allows JDE Professional to model the impact of a concept they have developed based on materials, production and End-of-Life. The tool is designed in such a way that it can be used early on in the design process, making it easy to compare ideas, concepts and other products with each other. Furthermore, the tool allows employees to model the impact of their products without the need of extensive knowledge about Life-Cycle-Assessments.

In conclusion, a framework has been developed that includes guidelines, checklists, and an LCA-lite. These tools have been incorporated in the current workflow JDE Professional to help them become better Design-for-Environment designers and engineers for future product development.
