Summary

Proving packaging functionality as a starting point for a design trajectory.

Developed for a new packaging format for milk powders

FrieslandCampina is an international dairy company that was founded in the Netherlands. Their goal is Nourishing by Nature, which they try to pursue through different Business Groups: Consumer Dairy, Dairy Essentials, Ingredients and Specialised Nutrition. Among their brands are well known Dutch brands such as Campina, Optimel and Valess. Packaging contributes to a significant amount of the company’s carbon footprint. Some have outdated consumer usability and limited consumer perception on hygiene. This is a problem for which FrieslandCampina wants to develop a new packaging solution, which functionality needs to be tested and validated.

To determine the focus and requirements for the new packaging solution, context research was conducted on: market and consumer insights, previous projects and physical characteristics of the product. This research is combined with an analysis of current packaging solutions, to create an overview of possibilities and identify the main problems for the development of a new packaging solution.

The problem statement converges the scope of the assignment towards proving the functionality of the new packaging through different design concepts. Several concepts are developed to aid the research into proving the packaging functionality, and tests are done to validate this. From these tests, design solutions and recommendations are formulated that would enable FrieslandCampina in further development of a new packaging solution.
