Manufacturing companies are facing increasing complexity an competition. In order to secure long-term competitiveness, manufacturers need to reduce the cost of quality while ensuring transparency of process-product relationships within the
manufacturing system.

This demand for improved quality management in combination with the ongoing digitisation of manufacturing systems, creates new possibilities for advanced quality management. In this field, Virtual Quality Gates(VQGs) are a promising solution. VQGs use manufacturing
data from the physical production floor to virtually model product- and process properties. These modelled relations can be used for real-time quality decision making at certain points in the manufacturing process (quality gates), forming a basis for advanced quality management.

This research presents proof-of-concept for predictive, model-based quality inspection, based on a case study of an in-line sawblade manufacturing process, aiming to improve the product quality whilst lowering costs and lead times of the sawblade manufacturer. The
solution comprises a databased approach, which identifies and models potential quality-gate relevant intermediate product features and their influence on final product properties within the manufacturer’s cyber-physical production system
