Summary
Running tracking technology (RTT) is widely used to enhance performance and reduce the risk of injury. However, significant scope remains for improvement in areas such as personalisation, data communication, and subjective experience. With the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI), many companies are exploring ways to leverage AI technology to bridge these gaps of RTT and enhance the running experience. The aim of this thesis is to explore potential front-end interaction concepts incorporating AI to enhance the running experience, guided by the main research question: What are the potential front-end interaction concepts that incorporate AI to enhance the running experience with running tracking technology? To tackle future design scenarios and comprehensively explore diverse possibilities, this thesis uses Speculative design approach. Firstly, opportunities for integrating AI with RTT were analysed based on understanding RTTs, AI and runners. Then, several concepts were created and evaluated through user testing. Finally, this thesis proposes a series of innovative AI-integrated RTT interaction features and forms for runners. These concepts specifically designed to meet runners' needs for personalisation and improved subjective experience. In conclusion, this research offers clear directions for the future development of RTT interaction design and demonstrates the great potential of AI in enhancing the running experience.
