Performance analysis of a thermochemical heat transformer for industrial waste heat recovery - Louws, S.F. (Stijn)

Samenvatting

The industrial sector emits a significant amount of heat. Recovery and reuse of waste heat have the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve industrial efficiency. Thermal upgrading of industrial waste heat increases the overlap between the heat supply and demand, hence the capacity of user demand increases. This study focuses on the thermal upgrading of industrial waste heat within the temperature range of 150 and 300°C using a thermochemical heat transformer. A numerical model is developed to investigate the performance of the process on a reactor and system level. According to the literature, the salt hydrate strontium bromide and water vapor are identified as promising reactive pairs. Strontium bromide shows a theoretic maximum heat upgrade of 172°C at a hydration vapor pressure of 1000 kPa and a minimum waste heat input of 170 °C. The dynamic model shows on a reactor level the influence of vapor pressure, mass flow, heat transfer, and source temperature on the thermal power and temperature upgrade. The main limiting parameter is the heat transfer within the reactor. A trade-off, and hence an optimization, must be made between the thermal power and the temperature upgrade.
