Sustainable Aviation Fuel from CO2 - Exploring a novel route via higher alcohols - Arkink, W.M. (Wout)

Samenvatting

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) could be a promising solution in the aviation sector. Due to high energy density requirements of fuel in the aviation industry, electrification and decarbonization would be challenging. SAF production pathways which are currently studied are mostly based on bio-based feedstocks which could be competitive with food production. Synthesis of SAF form carbon dioxide through conversion into higher alcohols can serve as a step in between for jet fuel production. In this way, carbon emissions could be reduced and renewable energy use can be optimized which enhances the sustainability of the fuel and its production.

The aim of this study is to systematically evaluate the potential of producing SAF via CO₂ conversion to higher alcohols. A comprehensive literature review is conducted to map existing and emerging technologies, focusing on catalytic processes, reaction conditions, and resulting product distributions. Based on these findings, the most promising catalysts and operating conditions are selected for basic process modelling. Based on these models, conceptual process designs are developed and simulated to assess technical performance at a preliminary scale.

Currently, existing bio-based routes face scalability and cost challenges. Converting CO2 into higher alcohols offers a promising alternative, combining carbon recycling with renewable energy. Beyond the technical aspects, socio-economic factors such as: global competitiveness, policy incentives, and societal acceptance are elaborated.
