Summary

The implementation of Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) in industrial environments has improved internal logistics and productivity in the last 70 years. However, current literature focuses mostly on the development of these AGVs from scratch, resulting in a gap in findings on how to retrofit existing industrial systems with AGV technology. This thesis tries to fill in that gap by proposing a systematic design methodology usable for retrofitting machinery with AGV tech. The proposed methodology is then applied to a real case study, where an already existing scissor-lift cart is redesigned into an omni-directional AGV. The research starts by reviewing relevant existing literature on AGV systems, including among others technology, safety, and compliance with safety standards. Based on these foundations, a modular and open-for-interpretation methodology is developed to guide the retrofit process from start to finish. For the case study, the methodology is then applied on a solution for transporting cassettes with raw material between storage systems and processing machines. The design includes a frame, housing, relevant safety and navigation components, and more. The final concept is validated with Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and other relevant testing. Nearing the end of the project, design choices are ultimately assessed, and the methodology is reflected upon. Afterwards, recommendations are given to both the methodology and the prototype. The research aims to provide a rational and structured approach to AGV retrofitting, and demonstrates its applicability to a real manufacturable prototype, thus aiming to contribute both academically and practically to the world of industrial automation.
