Summary

The introduction of recycled content in packaging polyethylene films creates challenges in maintaining the desired quality for printing and sealing. This research investigates how gels (impurities and defects) in films with post-consumer recycled (PCR) content influence heat-sealing strength and printing quality. It uses samples that vary in PCR content, batch and supplier, and through a systematic analysis across multiple phases to identify and classify the different gels and measure their impact on film quality.

Analysis showed that gels are predominantly located in the middle layer of the film, which correlates with the PCR content in that layer.

The project intends to support the process of Pregis to improve the quality of their products that will align with its customers’ needs and the EU goals for increased recycled content in packaging by 2030 and 2040.

The results of the test highlighted the importance of studying the role of the process extrusion, flow of individual film layers, and production conditions can be beneficial for understanding gel formation when using PCR content.
