Summary
This research project explores the impact of industrial design on sustainability through the development of a modular electric shaver optimized for repairability, reusability, and recyclability. In accordance with the European Union's Right to Repair directive, which will come into force in 2027, the study seeks to evaluate strategies that encourage sustainable consumption behaviors among users of Philips products by designing a product that integrates circular economy principles.
The research uses both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, including literature reviews, case studies, expert reviews, and user surveys conducted within the Philips grooming ecosystem. The analysis focuses on identifying barriers and opportunities in the development of electronic product repair strategies, taking into account user perceptions, their economic viability, and the technical aspects that require more innovative solutions. Based on these findings, the design of a modular electric shaver is proposed to improve the user experience and facilitate component repair and replacement.
The results provide insight into how product design can lead the transition to more sustainable consumption models. This approach is expected to not only comply with emerging regulations but also strengthen user-brand relationships by offering practical and affordable solutions to extend product lifespan.
