Summary
This research investigates how an explorative museum experience can enhance children's connection to local heritage. This research was conducted in collaboration with the Schoenenkwartier in Waalwijk, the only shoe museum in the Netherlands. Inspired by the Design Thinking Model, the research method was shaped to create a concept for an engaging, explorative experience using storytelling.
Through observations and video mapping, insights were gained regarding the spatial experience within the museum environment. By shifting the perspective and looking through the eyes of the target audience (children visiting the museum), design improvements and new interactive experiences were made. Moreover, a novel story about Okke de Spin (Spider) was analysed and incorporated into storytelling elements in the museum context. A design research method was developed to involve children in the design research, making them the main participants of the study. Through co-creation within the museum, they designed new museum experiences together with the researcher. The results were summarised in a development map to aid the museum in transitioning to a family-centred museum and integrating storytelling/hosting into their experience.
In conclusion, this research offers a new approach to involving children in design research through co-creation. It allows designers to shift their perspective to the target audience, proving valuable for the museum industry.
