Samenvatting

Hood in Hob systems are (down draft) cooking fume extraction hood’s integrated into the stove counter top of residential kitchens. This study aims to address the knowledge gap regarding the characteristics and performance of the hood in hob extraction system.

In the initial phase of this research, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model for a basic Hood in Hob was successfully developed, capturing all relevant physical phenomena. Experimental validation of the numerical model showed close agreement, confirming the model's reliability and validity in representing real-life phenomena.

This study introduced the Fume Extraction Efficiency (FEE) to complement the existing Capture Efficiency (CE) in evaluating the Hood in Hob system's performance. While CE assesses the extraction process's effectiveness, FEE indicates its efficiency. The significance of FEE was demonstrated, showing a peak efficiency at specific flow rates for a system.

The final phase of this research aimed at developing an improved extraction system. Ten concepts were designed and simulated using of the numerical framework created in the initial phase of the study to efficiently asses their performance.

Additionally, a new dimensionless group was introduced that broadly describes the physical aspects  of these types of systems. Using key geometrical features and system parameters, the Capture Efficiency performance can be estimated.
