Enhancing application adoption at KLM Engine Services with a human-centered, age-inclusive learning platform - Amaral, E. (Elise)

Summary

This thesis, in collaboration with the University of Twente and KLM, addresses the challenges of implementing digital tools at KLM Engine Services (ES), a department focused on airplane engine maintenance. Since 2018, KLM ES has introduced apps in an effort to digitalise the workplace to boost productivity, but adoption has been hindered by a predominantly older generation of employees who are less familiar with digital tools. This research explores the barriers to app adoption and seeks to design a solution that improves user understanding and usage. Using a design thinking framework and participatory design methods, including in-depth interviews and stakeholder meetings, a learning platform was developed. This platform aims to educate ES employees on app usage, reduce learning curves, and enhance productivity. The thesis emphasises the importance of human-centred design and continuous user involvement in successfully implementing digital tools within organisations.
